January has been a mixed month in Lochcarron and Wester Ross, some lovely days but some very wild and windy days. The contrast between the photographs below gives some idea of the difference in the days. Wandering through Ullapool I was almost fooled into thinking an early spring might come our way. Soon to be put right in my thinking this was followed by the wild day seen in the pics!

Two weeks in Lochcarron over Xmas and New Year

Spent almost two weeks in Lochcarron over Xmas and New Year and despite the wet and windy weather managed to fit in some wonderful walks, at Coulags, in the shadow of Beinn Alligin and the Coulin Pass, plus a drive round Applecross, doing the circuit from the Bealach to Applecross Bay, then north to Fearnbeg and home. The Coulags is a great spot for a leisurely walk (walking boots recommended) and you can reach the bothy without going very much uphill. Thereafter, you can continue on the path which leads to Torridon or strike out (at a spot marked by a cairn, before the lochan) to the spectacular hills to the west, including Maol Chean-dearg (a Munro). The Coulin Pass can be approached via the forest tracks from Achnashellach Station or the Pony Path further east off the main road. Beyond the woods, you can continue on to Torridon via Loch Clair or climb the hills to east or west for panoramic views of the mountains beyond. Peter Barr

If you are a people watcher — singer — musician — a people person or shy you will be welcome at the Village Hall.

Open mike, food but remember BYOB.

A must is the 5 mile trip from the cottages to the dead end at the hamlet of ARDANEASKAN where you can sit and see some of the best views the encountered. Abonus is a stop en route at Lochcarron Weavers for tea ( china cups!) and magnificent scones!!!

13.8.11 Really lovely cottage – spotless, comfortable and all we could need. Have managed to befirend Robins in the garden! Although the weather during our week was quite bad, we had fun visiting the surrounding area – Gairloch is stunning, the road to Applecross is hair-raising, and Plockton is like a Cornish Village next to a Loch! We enjoyed walking to the Lochcarron Pub for a drink and can recommend the venison at the Bistro – not the veggie options tho. Skye was a memorable day out, as was the visit to Eilean Donan castle – avoid the mad jobs worth in the car park! Beautiful, relaxing, rejuvinating, would love to visit again.

5.8.11 Had a wonderful week a fab location and beautiful cottage, great sunroom! Did a lot of cycling in the local area and swimming in the loch – own private pool! Village Bistro was very good, as was Applecross Inn, Kishorn Cafe and Nanny’s in shieldaig great for a snack/coffee. If you enjoy fish the village butcher sells it on Tues Wed and Thurs – Excellent. Best local sign – Stromeferry (no ferry) Lol…

My trip to Lochcarron

29.7.11 Had an amazing week cottage lovely, views spectaular, and we couldnt have ordered better weather. High light for us was our trip to Applecross, travelling over the hill with its breath taking views and often scary road. The PO and Shop well stocked, all three Lochcarron restaurants, Lochcarron Holtel Strathcarron Hotel and Carron Restaurant come highly recommended, friendly people, would definitely return.
